Hybrid modelling of an engine noise encapsulation

This paper presents a hybrid test-numerical modelling approach aimed at simulating the noise reduction that can be achieved combining passive and active noise control strategies on a real industrial test case. The study focuses on a train engine compartment, where a noise encapsulation is designed to attenuate engine noise radiation, with special concern to train pass-by events.

Acoustic testing of the engine is carried out in laboratory conditions to identify and rank the most relevant engine noise components. A numerical model is then realized for both the train engine and the acoustic encapsulation, which allows simulating the noise radiation of the engine compartment. Finally, the performance of an Active Noise Control System is numerically simulated to evaluate the potential for a combined passive and active noise control strategy to improve noise reduction.

After a first feasibility study using a sub-optimal layout for the ANC configuration, a step-wise optimization process is defined and implemented that allows identifying an optimal ANC configuration and leads to an improved noise reduction performance.
